OPUS Member on a Mission: Umrah for Labor Workers

How a Community Came Together for Umrah for Labor Workers

Founders back founders, and sometimes, that means backing the missions that matter most to them.

This is the story of Umrah for Labor Workers, the charity created by OPUS member Sophia Adas, and the group of people who came together to help her make a small moment of dignity possible.

A Journey Many Dream Of, But Few Can Reach

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah with deep spiritual significance.

For many labour workers, living in camps, working long hours, and supporting families back home, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream that rarely becomes reality.

Sophia set out to change that.

Her charity raises the funds, handles the logistics, and gives workers the chance to take a five-day journey they never thought they’d make.

When the Call Went Out, People Showed Up

Ahead of a recent trip, Sophia needed help preparing overnight bags for the workers. Essentials. Comforts. Things that make travel feel human.

She put a simple call out to the community.

People immediately stepped forward, each committing to bring 100 units of a single item.

Soon, a table filled with:

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Flip-flops
  • Prayer mats
  • Chocolate and snacks

What happened next was the kind of moment that reminds you what community can be.

Founders stood shoulder to shoulder, packing bags together, moving in quiet rhythm, making sure every worker would have what they needed for the journey ahead.

The following morning, volunteers joined Sophia on-site. They handed out the bags, spoke with the workers, and helped them board the buses that would carry them towards Makkah.

It was simple. Human. And deeply meaningful.

The Work Doesn’t End When the Buses Leave

Sophia’s mission extends far beyond the pilgrimage itself. She is now fundraising to install water coolers in labour camps that lack access to cold, clean drinking water — a basic dignity many of us never have to think about.

Why This Matters

This wasn’t about an organisation.

It was about people choosing to show up for other people.

A group of founders rallying behind a member with a mission.

A moment of collective care.

A reminder that ambition doesn’t only build companies, it can build impact.

Sophia won’t say it herself, so we will: she’s doing exceptional, necessary work. And we’re proud she's an OPUS member.
If you want to join a community that cares, deeply, you know where to find us.
